Proposal Topic!

The topic I would like to research for questioning a writing construct, would be plagiarism. I have decided to do plagiarism because I would like to go more into depth of what is means and how technology is becoming more efficient to discover when someone is plagiarizing something. During my high school career a lot of my classmates didn't exactly know what plagiarism meant, I didn't know until 7th grade. I would like to see how technology is playing a big role, and how plagiarism is being taken cared of, and how people tolerate with plagiarism. I think that this topic will be very interesting and I can find out how the law works with people who do plagiarize.

  1. Hi Courtney,

You'll want to think of some specific search terms, but this is a good start. Plagiarism is such a HUGE issue- I'm glad that you focused in on technology. Something you might look at is plagiarism detection software. These are basically large databases that run student work against other texts and other student essays looking for matches. When a COMPLETE match is found, that typically means the student is turning in someone else's work. Except it's way more complicated than that. I think a good direction for you for this project might be to explore whether or not these plagiarism detection softwares are helpful or even ethical. In one sense, they make a lot of money exploiting (you guessed it) someone else's work. They are only useful if they can keep a record of all the student papers that are submitted. Student work then, became a property of software company. Of course, there are a lot of other issues with these newer technologies, but I think this might be a good place to start. So you can search for "plagiarism detection" or even name the one Ohio U uses ("SafeAssign") but you might also look at an already prepared bibliography by Rebecca Moore Howard: http://www.rebeccamoorehoward.com/bibliographies/plagiarism-attitudes-definitions-and-detection-methods

Good work. Let's keep talking about this.
